B.E.S.T. 4: Environmental Protection

UNI EN ISO 14001 environmental certification, included in the B.E.S.T. 4, system, represents a further step forward in Costa Crociere’s traditional commitment to environmental protection.

The corporate policy provides for:
· the adoption of detailed operating standards;
· the installation of specific technologically advanced equipment for the treatment and processing of waste;
· regular environmental audits to measure and improve the Company’s environmental performance:

Environmental issues and conformity with the relevant international regulations are managed by the Environmental Compliance Department, with a dedicated Environmental Officer on board every ship.

Costa Crociere has also adopted a rigorous programme of training and education for its personnel. The aim is to guarantee the awareness of employees to the potential environmental impact of the activity of the Company and ensure they understand the importance of environmental compliance. There are various course levels for the shipboard and shoreside personnel. The first level is the same for all employees, while higher levels are arranged according to specific core competencies and individual responsibilities.

In 2003 Costa Crociere held 868 environmental compliance courses comprising a total of 34,924 training hours.

Attention is also paid to raising the awareness of Guests, with passenger orientation sensitising people in various ways during their stay on board to the need to protect the (marine) environment.
Among the preventive measures adopted is a dedicated e-mail address (environmental@carnival.com) which employees and Guests worldwide can use to draw attention to any matter that is a source of concern regarding the environmental management systems.

This corporate culture aiming at a model of environmental compliance excellence extends to the way the ships are constructed and operated. Two of the more recent additions to the fleet, the Costa Atlantica (2000) and Costa Mediterranea (2003), were both assigned the Green Star by RINA, certifying that they are designed, built and managed in an environmentally responsible manner.

The RINA “Green Star” award guarantees that the ships are not harmful to the environment and that they contribute to keeping the air and the sea clean. After ISO 14001 certification another important environmental award for the leading cruise company in Europe.
Miami, 15 March 2005 – RINA, the Italian Shipping Register, assigns “Green Star” voluntary certification to the Costa Cruises fleet. The certification was awarded at the 21st “Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention” in Miami, a convention that each year brings together the international major players in the cruise industry.

By awarding the “Green Star” RINA certifies that Costa ships do not damage the environment and that they contribute to keeping the air and the sea clean. “Green Star” certification in fact means that Costa ships comply with the highest standards in environmental protection for prevention against the pollution of the air and the sea, going beyond that required by the international MARPOL standards in use. These standards assign ships a series of technical and managerial requisites that contribute to the safeguarding of the environment. The special “Green Star design” however, is only given to ships that, from the very first planning stage, are designed to guarantee maximum respect for the environment. Two ships in the Costa fleet, the Costa Atlantica and Costa Mediterranea, were awarded the special “Green Star Design” in 2000 and 2003 respectively, upon their delivery to Costa by Kvaerner Masa Yards, the Finnish shipyard that built them.

Costa Cruises is committed to the continued improvement of environmental management and respect for the legislation and regulations in force. As well as the “Green Star”, back in May the RINA also awarded the company “B.E.S.T. 4” status, a system of voluntary certification attesting to the best international standards in terms of social accountability (SA 8000), the environment (UNI EN ISO 14001), safety (OHSAS 18001), and quality (UNI EN ISO 9001). Furthermore, as a means to best manage the various environmental issues, in 2002 Costa Cruises established the Environmental Compliance Division to oversee environmental protection and compliance with related international legislation, appointing an official on board each ship specifically to help in this task. Costa Cruises' environmental protection programme is outlined in its Environmental Compliance Plan (ECP), a manual that integrates perfectly with the safety management and pollution prevention system.

WWF’s "Earth Hour" initiative

Costa Cruises takes part in WWF's "Earth Hour" with Europe's largest fleet
On March 26, 2011 at 8.30 pm, the lights will be symbolically switched off on board the 14 Costa Cruises ships deployed around the world as well as in the Company’s Genoa Head Office as Costa joins WWF’s stand in favor of a more “sustainable” future for our planet.
On March 26 at 8.30 pm, Costa’s ships deployed on cruises worldwide – in the Mediterranean, South America, the United Arab Emirates, Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Far East – will take positive action for the environment and celebrate their commitment to the planet by switching off all the “bunting”, the funnels and the lights on the outside decks, in compliance with safety procedures. The event will also be celebrated in the shipboard restaurants with a special “candlelit dinner”. Guests vacationing on the Costa fleet will be informed about Earth Hour.
